What is dry needling?

Dry needling is an effective form of physical therapy for the treatment of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. We use thin monofilament needles to evaluate and treat neuromuscular dysfunction, pain, motor control, and muscle recruitment. This intervention can be used to treat most conditions seen in an outpatient physical therapy setting.

How does it work?

Dry needling is not acupuncture (traditional Chinese medicine). Dry needling is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. A very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin and into the deeper tissues that are considered trigger points. These trigger points are responsible for your pain. Dry needling works by causing a micro lesion within the pathological tissue thus breaking up shortened tissues. Breaking up these tissues decreases a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue, normalizing the inflammatory response. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which ultimately reduces pain.

What conditions can be treated?

Dry needling can be effective in treating acute or chronic muscular pain in any body region (back, shoulder, lower extremity, upper extremity, and neck), radiating nerve pain (burning/tingling into the upper or lower extremity), and much more! However, dry needling is not for everyone. Your physical therapist will take you through a thorough evaluation to determine whether you may benefit from, and are appropriate for this intervention.

Is dry needling covered by insurance?

Dry needling is physical therapy treatment, not acupuncture.  If physical therapy is covered by your insurance then dry needling should be covered under your physical therapy benefits. However, if you have questions or need further information, please reach out to us!
