Whether you’re ready or not, the holidays are upon us – Christmas decorations already adorn the streets of our towns. This can be a stressful time of year. Many of us ending up working more hours than usual to meet demand and it can be a lot to juggle. Add in the societal pressures of gift buying, decorating, and “holiday cheer” (even if you don’t feel it), you may be feeling more like Ebenezer Scrooge.

We understand. Here are a few tips to keep yourself grounded this year.

  1. Breathe. Take 3 long, deep inhales, followed by 3 full exhales. The more stressed we are, the shorter and shallower our breath can become. Be sure to keep breathing.

  2. Go for a walk. In 2020, “going for a walk” has become a recurring, annoying theme, but it’s sound advice. Get some fresh air and don’t take your phone with you. Disconnect and take in your surroundings.

  3. Do something you enjoy and don’t ask permission. Want to sit and read an entire book in one sitting? Do it. And don’t feel guilty for doing so.

  4. Schedule a massage or physical therapy appointment. If you have a lingering ache or pain that you just haven’t gotten around to taking care of, call us. You don’t need to suffer, and stress can exacerbate pain.

COVID-19 isn’t going to let up anytime soon, and that means we’ll need to modify yet another aspect of our lives to stay safe. The holidays won’t look like they normally do. But humans are remarkably adaptable – we’ve made it this far, haven’t we?
